Enhance Your Wellbeing Through Holistic Interior Design

I have been doing a deep dive into the practice of Holistic Design as of late, thanks to my mentor Aimee Lopez @theholisticinteriors, who is an expert in the field (and a beautiful soul who inspires calm and wellbeing!). Holistic Design will become increasingly critical to sustain and improve quality of life in urban settings like Miami, where overbuilding and limited urban planning are only just beginning to have a huge impact on our lives and our health.



When it comes to interiors, unlike the usual design approaches that focus mainly on aesthetics, holistic interior design is all about creating spaces that feel good for your mind, body, and spirit. Think of it as designing a space that’s not just pretty but also super functional, calming, and tailored to your personal needs and well-being.


At its heart, holistic interior design creates spaces that support you. It recognizes how much your surroundings can affect your mood, health, and overall vibe. It’s not just about picking the right couch or color—it’s about how everything from lighting to textures works together to create harmony and balance.


Key Principles of Holistic Interior Design


1. Bringing Nature Indoors

A key element of holistic design is creating a connection between you and nature. In an

earlier post I discuss the practice of Biophilic Design, which is but one (albeit very

important!) facet of a Holistic practice. Biophilic design incorporates plants and natural

materials like wood or stone into your design and décor. It also focuses on bringing in as much natural light as possible into a space. Connecting with nature helps us relax and recharge.


2. Using Space Mindfully

Every part of your home should make sense and work for you. Holistic design is all about functional spaces that flow naturally. No unnecessary clutter—just areas that make life easier and more enjoyable.


3. Keeping It Sustainable

Caring for the planet is a big part of this design philosophy. Using eco-friendly materials, reusing what you already have, and reducing waste are key. It’s a win-win—good for the Earth and your home’s vibe.


4. Focusing on Your Health

Holistic design pays attention to things like air quality, comfort, and lighting. For example, picking non-toxic paints or ergonomic furniture can make a big difference in how you feel. Even small changes, like adjusting lighting and color palettes, can boost your mood and energy levels.


5. Making It Personal

Your space should reflect you. Whether it’s a favorite piece of art, a family heirloom, or a cozy reading nook, adding personal touches makes your home feel like your sanctuary.
