Even though we are lucky enough to live in the Sunshine State, and that Miami gets an average of 248 sunny days a year, well thought out lighting design is still a hugely important element that can make or break a space.
Lighting adds warmth and brightness to dark spaces, making them places where you want to spend time. In an earlier blog I wrote about the importance of light placement, color and temperature, but today I want to focus instead how to use lighting both for function and form.
There are 3 layers of lighting that an interior designer will consider when lighting a space.
Ambient lighting is the most common usage of lighting. This lighting allows us to navigate a space safely and perform basic tasks. Ambient lighting can come from chandeliers, recessed lighting, ceiling mounted fixtures, sconces and floor lamps.
Task lighting is used in conjunction with ambient lighting such as reading, studying, and meal preparation.
Accent lighting, or design lighting, can be used to highlight an object (art or a wall treatment), or create interest and depth for a particular area in the home.

The Bedroom
Chandeliers in the bedroom add loads of drama and mood (just make sure that they are on dimmers). In this image, the task lighting for reading in bed is obtained by the wall lamp, while accent lighting highlights the fireplace.
The Kitchen
In the kitchen, make a bold statement with your fixtures. Get creative and play with the functionality of your lights. Add a statement a light fixture. This pendant lamp by Cerno does double duty as a task light and statement piece. Undercabinet lighting is designed for your kitchen prep tasks, but in this case also services as accent lighting when applied to open shelving.
The Bathroom
Every woman understands the importance of the lighting in the bathroom. It is where you get ready - and must have good light, or risk looking too made up (or worse!). We love sconces along both sides of the mirror above the vanity to flood your face with light, mimic natural light and make applying makeup and getting ready that much easier.
Don’t forget to add lighting in your shower enclosure!
Living Room
Because your living spaces have many uses, your lighting design needs to be layered to maximize the functionality of the space while accentuating the key features. I love this system from Supermodular, a contemporary take on track lighting with myriad fixture options, including pendants, spots and linear lights that are flexible enough to be used for almost any application.
Corridors
Your corridors and hallways need not be drab dark spaces. Accent lighting and sconces make this hallway look sculptural and wide.
